License
SkyLab is released under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3.0 (AGPL-3.0). The full text is the LICENSE file in the repository.
What it means in practice
- Running SkyLab inside your school or organisation, with or without local changes, carries no obligation beyond the license itself.
- Modifying SkyLab and letting third parties use it over a network, for example as a hosted or managed service, requires you to make your modified source available to those users (AGPL section 13).
- Redistributing SkyLab or a derivative requires keeping the license, the copyright notices and the
NOTICEfile. - Commercial licensing is available for organisations that want to offer SkyLab as a service without the source-sharing terms, or need other terms. Open an issue or contact the maintainers.
The application shows its version, commit and the list of bundled open-source components under Account settings → About.
Notices
NOTICEkeeps the MIT notices of the templates the project started from: the Full Stack FastAPI Template (parts of the backend scaffolding, the Docker Compose layout and the e-mail templates) and an Electron + Vue 3 + Vite template (desktop client).THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.mdlists the direct open-source dependencies with their licenses. The desktop client bundles its own list,desktop-client/THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt, with the installer.- "SkyLab" and the SkyLab logo are names of this project; the license covers the code, not the name.
Contributions
Contributions are accepted under the same license. Every commit needs a Developer Certificate of Origin sign-off (git commit -s); the details are in CONTRIBUTING.md. Changing the license of the project would need the agreement of every existing contributor.
